These mistakes, while common, can be easily avoided which is why it is important that you find out what these mistakes are. By finding out about the mistakes now, you can easily avoid facing some of the same problems with your website in the future. When these mistakes happen to occur, a website can lose a lot of traffic and viewers which is definitely unfortunate. Protect your website by preventing these common web design mistakes. It’s definitely doable.

1. Dysfunctional Search Engine

All websites should include a small search box on the page because it is most convenient for the website viewers. If they are looking for something in particular throughout your entire website, they can easily click into the search engine box and type in the words for what they are looking for. Without having a search engine, the website viewers may get annoyed and possibly even frustrated which will lead them to venture off onto another site. What is even worse than not having a search engine on your website is having a search engine that just does not work probably. You must make sure that your search engine is something small and easy to use for all viewers of the website. It should also be compatible with the layout of your website. Having a complex search engine box on your website will only further confuse website viewers which actually defeats the purpose entirely. Avoid this common mistake.

2. Too Much Text

Who would think that too much text could be a turn off for viewer? While website viewers want to find out important information when they head to your site, they don’t want to have to read through several pages just to get to the point. Paragraphs on the website should be short and to the point. All sentences should be short as well.

Most importantly, the website designer should make sure the text speaks to the reader and catches their eye. How can you do this? Use bold or italic text to highlight some of the most important parts of the content that you are displaying on your website. You can also use bullet or numbered lists for certain information because it breaks down all of the different types of information and makes it so much easier to look at especially for those who prefer to just scan over the website. And the truth is, most people prefer scanning over a website instead of reading all of the content. Here’s an example of how to use a bullet list so that the content will be easier to read:

Use Bold and Italics for IMPORTANT keywords

Use bullet or number lists to sort through important facts

Avoid lengthy sentences and huge paragraphs

Keep sentences short and to the point

3. Small Text

As a website owner, it is important for you to remember that people of all ages will likely be checking out your website. Keep this in mind when you choose a font size for the text o your website. Small text, size 12 and under, is often too small for senior citizens as well as people who have vision problems. Keep the text at a size where it isn’t too big to look ridiculous but it isn’t too small that some viewers cannot read the important information that you are listing on your website.

4. Not User Friendly

The problem that a lot of website owners face is making their website user friendly. When a website is designed, the sole purpose is usually to receive as much traffic as possible. However, many people forget this when they are actually in the process of designing their website. If your website isn’t user friendly, viewers will be turned off and you will likely receive less traffic. There are several ways that you can make you website very user friendly and best of all, it does not really take much effort to do this.

Add a search engine feature

Create a navigation system that allows viewers to navigate through your website quickly and easily

Create an FAQ section that answers questions that viewers have

Use a decently sized font

Provide detailed information and add pictures when necessary

These are just some of the ways that you can make your website user friendly. In fact, you may even want to create a section that allows viewers of your website to send in comments and suggestions on how you can continue to make your website user friendly. When you have a website, it is important to put the viewers first because they are the ones who can make or break your website.

5. Too Many Advertisements

We understand that as a website owner, you will need to advertise for other people and you may have affiliates whose advertisements you are placing on your website. It’s not that you can’t place advertisements on your website but placing too many of them all over a website can definitely be a turn off for most viewers. For example, if you use the Google Adsense program as a means of making money with your website, you will have the option to place advertisements on different areas of your website. If you place advertisements on the top of the page, bottom of the page, and on both sides, your viewers will feel surrounded by advertisements which definitely isn’t very user friendly.

Place advertisements on your website but do it in a tasteful manner. Sometimes, less is more and in this instance, that is definitely the case. Do not do yourself a disservice by placing tons of different advertisements on one page of your website. You can spread the advertisements out evenly through the different pages of your website. This will still allow you to display the advertisements that you want on your website without scaring your viewers away.

Conclusion

Avoiding these common web design mistakes is actually quite simple especially if you know how to prevent these mistakes in the first place. To run a successful website, you should make sure that your search engine box works properly, you sort through the text and use bullet points and numbers, keep everything user friendly, and avoid overdoing it with the advertisements. If you can avoid these mistakes, you can run a successful website.

Related posts:

SEO initiates. It’s a hassle to try to make your page more search-engine friendly for more than one search engine, and besides, how many people even search outside of Google? What if I told you that that answer was as high as 30% of all searches? After all, did you really think that there was an IT market that Microsoft couldn’t muscle its way into?

With rare exceptions, what helps you with one search engine will help you with another. Very little will get you forcibly pushed down the listings. This means that whatever you do with Bing should also help you at least a bit with Google and all other search engines. So since you don’t have anything to lose by doing so, let’s look at some of the most commonly offered tips for making sure your site gets well Binged.

Pay it forward

Google also places some value on having relevant links out, but it appears from most metrics that Bing scores this even higher. As always don’t overdo it. Search engine programmers are well aware of how much you want to game their systems. Keep it well populated, but not overcrowded.

Say anything

Bing also gives more attention to pages with a significant amount of text. You’ll want at least 300 words of original text on your page. Keep it relevant, and keep the keyword stuffing to a dull roar: once or twice per 300 word block is the most common recommendation.

Title your pages

Once, the title of your page was one of the more important page rank considerations. Other search engines seem to have dropped that. Bing is bringing it back, so make sure you put your most relevant keywords in there. Again, though, don’t overdo it: one site recommends no more than 65 characters for this field. This is a one-line-per-page fix that could make a huge difference.

Structure your site well

Bing puts more emphasis on site architecture than other web search engines. Some ways to take advantage of this include the following:

Make your site “crawlable” – Ensure that your site is easy to navigate. You can use a robots.txt file to help guide Bing along.

Invest in a sitemap – A single page that maps out your entire web site is a good, comprehensive way to make sure your site is fully indexed. For that matter, make it, and then go right to Bing and submit it there.

Keep it text-based – Have as much of the information you want Bing to find in the form of text. If you have to have a heavy multi-media presentation, make sure that for all of if you have sufficient alternate text.

To make it clear that we’re not just posting a useless guide, consider that one study ranked Bing higher than Google in “search efficiency.” This is the metric of how much users click through on the engine’s suggested results. This means that Bing just might soon be giving Google a run for its money, seeing as how results relevance is the #1 goal of a search engine. If you are trying to get your site noticed, then this is not something you’ll want to miss out on.

Related posts:
<ul

Regardless of your standpoint, there is no arguing with the fact that highly ranked web sites consistently receive a lot of traffic with minimal effort simply because they are at the top of the search engines for specific keywords. However, there is a no school of thought emerging, that is similar to a ‘get rich quick’ equivalent in internet traffic – viral traffic. Viral traffic is any traffic that originates from sources other than search engines due to word of mouth online. For example, a YouTube video that sends thousands of visitors to your site overnight would be viral traffic. Thus, which is better, search engine optimization or viral traffic?

Effort and Investments

In terms of effort and investment, viral marketing costs nothing in most cases and can bring loads of traffic to your site with a single upload of a video. Search engine optimization on the other hand takes time and persistence in order to be effective, and even after months of trying many people never reach true success because they lack the exclusive tools and knowledge needed to outrank professional web site owners that have been practicing search engine optimization for a long time. Thus, if you are a novice webmaster and you are clueless about search engine optimization, your first approach should be to try and generate vial traffic using any method you can.

Sustainability and Stability

Unfortunately, viral marketing is not as sustainable and usually dies down within a couple of days of the onset of heightened traffic levels. Search engine optimization usually lasts as long as your site is ranked highly for specific keywords, however it is important to note that search engine optimization brings unstable results even when done successfully. Some days you may have hundreds of visitors and on other days you may only have one, there is jut not telling. This is true regardless of how large your site is or the topic that it pertains to, as there is no way to predict the interest of the public. Viral traffic is a bit more stable while it lasts, so therefore is more stable in some respects, but it has the potential to be just as unstable and search engine traffic. In general, all web traffic is inconsistent in some respects, which is why it is important to diversify your online income streams.

Learning Curve

As you may have gathered by now, SEO is not for the faint of heart and requires countless hours of research and the willpower to implement strategies that may or may not yield success months down the road. Generating a viral traffic surge based on a YouTube video is perhaps the easiest way to get traffic, whoever there is also a science to it. You have to know what people like and want, and then capitalize on this to generate a buzz, unless of course you;re planning on getting lucky. In the end, good old search engine traffic is always more profitable, more consistent and more sustainable than viral traffic, however viral traffic provides an adrenaline rush and shorts bursts of traffic that even the most successful SEO campaign cannot generate.

Related posts:
<ul

Every couple of months Google makes a few major adjustments to keep this algorithm relevant and powerful. In fact, throughout the year Google is constantly tweaking their practices to keep professional webmasters on their toes. For months now Google has been talking about a major infrastructure change that will reshape the way Google search results are delivered. This change has been deemed “The Caffeine Update.”

What is This Update Going To Do?

It is important to note that the caffeine update is not going to change the way the Google web site looks or behaves. In fact, Google has stated that most people will not even notice the difference. The caffeine update is basically a complete cleaning and revamping of Google’s “filing cabinets.” In other words, Google is changing the way it stores and catalogs information to be able to expand its already massive database. What is not clear is how this change will effect search engine results and rankings, if at all. However, there have been preliminary tests done which show no difference in the search results of Google’s default search engine and the beta version of the caffeine update.

Will it Affect Ranking?

As of now there have not been any indications that the page rank of sites will be affected, especially considering the test that have been performed by search engine optimization professionals in the past year. Thus, site owners that are worried about losing rankings due to the new update have nothing to fear. Google understands the importance of site rankings for online business owners and marketers, and is not taking steps to thwart honest search engine optimization efforts. There has been some speculation as to whether the caffeine update will affect the ranking of exact match domain names.

Many people believe that because of the the MayDay update that affected long tail keywords the caffeine update will elaborate upon this concept and damage the rankings of long tail keyword domains. As of now there have been no studies done that substantiate these claims and concerns.

Will Google Tell Us About The Changes?

Unfortunately, Google is very secretive about algorithm changes as it does not want the public to make attempts at manipulating Google search results by deciphering their patented algorithm. Thus, there is limited information available about any Google update. However, Google does release limited information about the basic changes that are made during an update.

Nonetheless, it is likely that most of the revealing information will be found months after the update during tests conducted by individual marketing and search engine optimization firms. If you are a webmaster that owns many websites you may be able to start performing analysis and tests that could yield some valuable information about the changes within the coming months.

Related posts:
<ul

In fact most people give up once they realize how much studying is involved in the process. The fact is, not everyone is cut out for search engine optimization, and most people quit within the first couple of weeks and decide to hire a company to handle the task for them.

It is not at all common to see someone begin their mission in search engine optimization with great zeal, only to become overwhelmed by the vast amount of information that needs to be learned and applied to reach success. Much of this information cannot be found in a single location and it takes weeks if not months to become familiar with the entire process of optimizing a website for search engine success.

Finished from the Beginning

Unfortunately even with all of the experience in the world you will not always be able to achieve the success you desire, especially if you’re trying to capitalize in a heavily competitive market. The fact is, maybe the single most important aspect of search engine optimization is keyword optimization. If you are not targeting the right keywords then your plan is doomed form the very beginning. This means you need to do keyword research before you can actually begin your endeavor.

Once you know what keyword you’re promoting you can find all of the related keywords and begin designing your site around that list of keywords. If you have already built your site and it is based on a keyword that you cannot change, such as your physical business, then your search engine optimization efforts are going to be twice as difficult. In fact you probably won’t be able to achieve the success you are looking for without hiring a professional, doing extensive research, and/or completely rethinking your gameplan.

SEO Experts

The sad fact is many of the so called experts in search engine optimization are no more certifiably qualified than you are to optimize your website. In fact, you probably know your website better than anyone ever will, and that gives you an instant advantage as it is. If you do decide to hire a search engine optimization expert, you would be better of paying a tutor to teach you how to do it yourself, as this would yield a much greater return on your investment. This way you would be able to use the knowledge gained for your future endeavors, instead of wasting your money on an operation that is not even guaranteed to bring success.

Finding Good SEO Services

So how can you find a good service that will actually help you increase your traffic with search engine optimization? The answer is actually quite simple -You need to understand what is a realistic expectation, and you need to find a company or an individual that will help you achieve that expectation. A reliable and experienced search engine optimization expert will give you a realistic quote for realistic results, whereas the “gurus” will try to charge you thousands of dollars for results that sound too good to be true. If you use this simple method to find help, you will be able to achieve realistic goals in a relatively short amount of time.

Related posts:
<ul

In the beginning of the domain name game, you could acquire any name you wanted without failure, now as corporations buy domains by the thousands it has become nearly impossible to find a name that will suit your business perfectly. However, it is important not to give up on your search for the perfect domain name. The name of your website will be your online brand. Having a memorable and authoritative brand is very important because it will give you a presence in your niche.

Building an Online Reputation Through Branding

You may think that the name of your website does not matter, however this couldn’t be further from the truth. Even the best search engine optimization experts on the planet cannot give you what a good domain name can. The first thing people will mention when they talk about your website is the domain name. With countless millions of websites online, it is very important to have a name that is simple to remember.

Every domain name is completely unique, therefore it can be seen as your online fingerprint. The entire identity of your online business will be decided primarily by your domain name. Simply having a good domain name will make your site appear to be more credible, and it can even make the search engines favor your site more, depending upon what keywords your domain names contain.

Finding The Right Domain Name

Thousands of domains are purchased each day, and every moment you let pass without purchasing your dream domain, is another opportunity for your competition to purchase it first. Some individuals and companies purchase domain names by the hundreds just to turn around and sell them for ridiculous prices to people that need them in the future. If these companies can make a living off of finding good domain names, then surely you can find just one to represent your online business!

Finding the right name can be a very difficult process, but before you resort to paying an exuberant amount of cash to retrieve your desired domain name, you should consider your options. If you lack in the creativity department you could use a domain name generator software that will automatically generate concepts for you. You could also enlist the help of freelancers. There are many creative minds online in forum communities that would be willing to lend a helping hand for just a few extra dollars You could hold a contest in one of these forums and specify what you are looking for in a domain name. This is a good way to brainstorm with other people from all walks of life.

Don’t Hesitate

If you have an idea for a domain name now, then I would strongly suggest that you purchase it now before someone else does. You never know when the domain name will no longer be available.

Your domain name is a very important part of your online business, in fact without a memorable name your entire business could fail based on this factor alone! Remember this the next time someone asks you “What’s in a name?” Give them this answer: “Success!”

Related posts:

Last month, Microsoft and Yahoo finally struck a deal that will make these two internet super-powers a worthy competitor to Google. However, it isn’t necessarily what Microsoft had hoped for. Rather than a merger, the two have agreed to combine their search and advertising expertise to generate revenue through their respective search engines. Despite the news, an announcement made in a Monday press conference proves that Yahoo is gearing up to do battle with its old rival Google, as well as its future partner, Microsoft.

While Microsoft’s Bing will power the search efforts for both companies, Yahoo will work independently on its search engine user interface. According to internal sources, it plans to make this interface more efficient than the offerings of both Google and Microsoft.

Prabhakar Raghavan, Senior Vice President of Yahoo Labs and Search Strategy, said that the company is collaborating with Microsoft on the back-end, but will continue to complete on the front-end. He noted that crawling and indexing are currently of less importance than enhancing the web experience via the user interface. Raghavan and his colleagues emphasized that the company does not intend to abandon the field of search innovation entirely, making it clear that the Yahoo search engine will continue independent of Bing.

In late July, Microsoft and Yahoo agreed to a much anticipated partnership that will enable Microsoft Bing to power the Yahoo search site. Per the agreement, Microsoft will maintain the pay-per-click search advertising models while Google will sell advertising services of both companies to premium subscribers. Barring clearing from the United States Department of Justice, the agreement will equate to a 10-year partnership. Executives for both companies have stated that the implementation process could take as long as two years to complete. In the meantime, Yahoo is gauging the response of a new search results page. The new page is randomly available to worldwide internet users, offering features that allow them to filter queries to more efficiently refine search results. The company is also in the process of creating a more intelligent engine that automatically learns from previous searches and makes the according adjustments for the benefit of the user.

In addition the above enhancements, Yahoo is looking to feature more tools such as Search Assist, that allow users to refine their queries on the fly, as well as Search Pad, which helps users organize the information they find within search results. It also desires to let its users perform more tasks within the search engine interface by incorporating more information into results. One idea involves delivering this information through popular customer review sites like Yelp.

According to Larry Cornett, President of Yahoo Search Products and Design, all of these efforts and more are designed to create a Yahoo search engine that is more personally relevant than what has been seen in other search engines thus far. More importantly, it shows that Yahoo is still moving forward independently in light of the likely future partnership with Microsoft.

Hiring an SEO firm is a move that cannot only improve the optimization of your site, but also help you save time and increase your bottom line over the long haul. However, this is a large decision and one that deserves careful consideration on your part. Choosing the wrong company could damage your reputation and ultimately hinder the success of your business. While some of these experts companies can provide valuable services, others have blemished the market with unethical practices, utilizing overly aggressive marketing tactics to manipulate the SERPs (search engine result pages) in ways looked down upon by search engines. These practices tend to violate guidelines and could result in a penalty that lowers your sites’s ranking or complete removal from the search engine index. There are many pitfalls that must be avoided, thus this article will let you know what to look for when choosing an SEO firm.

1.) Know the Facts

It is very common for SEO firms to make the claims of being able to deliver guaranteed rankings. They often allege special relationships with major search engines or boast the ability to guarantee high rankings with priority site submissions. These are the type of companies you want to avoid at all costs. There is no such thing as guaranteed rankings or priority submissions. If a particular company is offering something that seems too good to be true, it probably is.

2.) Get the Facts

Should the SEO firm throw something your way that you don’t completely understand, never hesitate to ask for comprehensive explanations to clear things up. This is very important because if the company creates misleading or deceptive content for your site, you could be removed from the search engine index entirely. Although you want a company that operates with honor, in the end, you are held liable for the actions of the firm you hire for SEO. By gathering all the facts, you can determine if their services will aid in your cause, or end up doing you more harm than good.

3.) Be Cautious of Linking

We recommend steering clear of any firm that tries to persuade you with free-for-all links, link farms or other schemes to achieve link popularity. You should also think twice about any company that wants to submit your site to thousands of search engines. In most cases, these practices have no positive bearing on search engine rankings. If anything, they will end up impacting your rankings in a negative way.

4.) Know What You’re Paying For

There are a number of search engines that combine PPC (pay per click) results with the standard search results. This is where you really need to be cautious of SEO firms because some will guarantee you a ranking, but have you placed in the advertised section opposed to the regular search results. To avoid this trick and others like it, be sure to ask the company where your money is going and if any of it will be applied to rankings that show up temporarily on the advertising side of the page.

Related posts:
<ul
