Don't go with 1and1 hosting. You will end up losing your domain name once you transfer to another hosting. This is the only hosting that is not capable of trasferring domain name - but they tell you otherwise. Once you decide to transfer domain, they will automatically lock your account (that means you cannot access your own account). You should delete, back up all your files before transferring to another domain. Once you transfer your domain name, they will tell you that it will take 3 days to a week for the release of your domain name. After at least 3 days (you will be lucky if they will unlock it after 3 days), you cannot transfer your domain name since another company already reserved your domain name. A certain Roiquest.com takes over your domain name.

I've been using them for about a year now, and I am switching to a new host soon. The web interface is the worst, pretty much unuseable. Webmail is impossibly, impossbily slow.

I've used 1&1 for 2.5 years now. I have the 1&1 Business package to host several domains that I use mostly for personal use or small groups such as alumni orgs and MMO clans. I use the unix hosting and do most of my own coding. I tried out some of their webbuilder features and setup one of their blogs. They worked fine, but I found that I liked having a finer amount of control that installing Wordpress myself can give me. I use about 10 of my 50 MySQL databases and haven't had any issues using their web interface. My biggest complaint is that I only have one SSH account and the username/password are randomly generated strings that are difficult to remember. However, I can create as many FTP accounts as I want and can limit access to the accounts any way I'd like, which makes it easier to let someone else make changes to the sites. Overall, I've been happy with 1&1. With 3 domains included in the $9/mo and only $6/yr for addons, the price beats the other hosts on this site.

OK, it's cheap and if you want something simple and non-critical that may override everything else. But if it goes wrong you'll end up talking on a poor line to some poor outsoource guy in India who has no idea what is going on. Today I was told they couldn't help because all their support tools had gone down and engineers were trying to fix that!

Originally had .net service, switched to unix hosting. They never were able to bring my site up after th transfer. I spoke to a whole bunch of indian males and females about the problem, but they had serious issues understanding me, which I find hard to understand as I am a tech person myself. An attempt to get a supervisor took 4 phone calls, 20 minutes of arguing on the phone with multiple people and then waiting on hold for just as long. My issue's which took "24-48 hours" to resolve, never got resolved.

I have been dealing with 1 and 1, they are the worst I had seen. Worthless support, rude and ignorant people. It took them 10 days to fix a small issue, and because of that I lost lots of money... They do not even care if you cancel your package or go to another hosting, which I finally did

Although 1and1 may be an okay host for a first time user. For the rest it is useless! No Fantastico, rude customer service, the click and build features never works properly. If you instal Joomla you are not able to make any changes to the template. The list goes on! so many restrictions makes this company the worst webhost I have ever had. It took a full 2 months for my account to get activated and once it was there was a problem with the server that took 1and1 a further month to fix.

It is very difficult to talk with a technical person. They would not give me intelligent help and it took two weeks for a simple domain transfer.

I have used them for 2yrs now and they are OK. Tech support is another story, as far as keeping the servers up and running, I have to say damn good. But anything a little off the path and the support is clueless. ex. they have a point and click installation for joomla etc. You can't use it, they make all folders and files unwritable. When contacting tech support, they tell me they are supposed to be and connot be changed :) I mean like whats the point :) I also use northpal and man you do what you want :)))

I thought it is a huge company and I will get great service, but, although the prices are good I would rather pay 100x more but have my site run normal. No offence to Philippines', but I could not understand them at all, and I think it would be nice to talk to a tech person and not someone sitting in a bedroom talking to me while I can hear the baby crying in the background. This is so messed up! My site came down so I called them to find out the problem and get it back online. Not only it was down for 2 days, but I kept getting the same stupid answer - “we are researching the problem.” At the end, it was their fault with the name servers.
