Let\u2019s break it down, for those slightly less tech-savvy: \u201cit\u2019s socialization of everything, from simple everyday devices to industrial devices,\u201d explains Internet of Things Council member, <a title=\"Internet of Things Why Does It Matter by Make\" href=\"https:\/\/makezine.com\/2014\/02\/06\/the-internet-of-things-why-does-it-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Koster<\/a>.\u00a0<a title=\"Wikipedia Internet of Things Entry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_of_Things\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>\u00a0further defines the Internet of Things as &#8220;uniquely identifiable objects and their virtual representations in an\u00a0Internet-like structure.&#8221; \u00a0<a title=\"Techopedia Internet of Things definition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/28247\/internet-of-things-iot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Techopedia<\/a> puts it in perspective like this: &#8220;the first version of the Internet was about data created by people, while the next version is about data created by things.&#8221; The Internet of Things is this new interconnected web of &#8220;smart&#8221; objects\/animals\/people that are one big information system, with the Internet as their means of connection.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all great, but why does the Internet of Things matter? <em>Does<\/em> it matter?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Five good reasons why the Internet of Things (IoT) matters:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.) \u00a0 \u00a0The IoT can (and will) rule your world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From <a title=\"Canary Home Security\" href=\"https:\/\/www.www.crowdcow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home security<\/a>, to remote starters and temperature control, the Internet of Things is not coming to <em>a<\/em> device near you, it\u2019s coming to <em>all<\/em> the devices near you. Soon you will be able to use your phone (or the equivalent) to control just about every programmable device you own: thermostat, scale, refrigerator, car, lightbulb, garage door, coffee maker, stove, sink, stereo, shower\u2026 You\u2019ll be able to control your entire external world with the flick of a finger and view that world from afar through the tiny screen you carry in your pocket.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.) \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cThe Internet of Things is People, <a title=\"Fast Company Internet of Things Innovating\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3003336\/internet-things-people-innovating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Innovating<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re \u00a0not just talking smart lamps, but smart lamp-posts, smart mail boxes. The search for new frontiers has existed since we realized there <i>were<\/i> frontiers: technology may be the Last New Frontier and presents amazing opportunities for entrepreneurs, inventors, innovators and the insatiably curious. \u201cIt\u2019s for the <a title=\"Internet of Things Why Does It Matter by Make\" href=\"https:\/\/makezine.com\/2014\/02\/06\/the-internet-of-things-why-does-it-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">people<\/a>,\u201d Koster tells us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a03.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The IoT is creating smarter things.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Smarter things with \u201ctiny electronic <a title=\"Internet of Things Innovating\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3003336\/internet-things-people-innovating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brains<\/a>\u201d that will soon be able to think for us&#8211;better still&#8211;think for themselves. Lights will turn on when we come into the room and turn out when we leave it; devices will make our breakfast and ensure our coffee is ready just before we walk out the door. Temperature will be adjusted when we leave the house and just before we enter it. Much of this happens already for the technologically advanced and fiscally able, but innovation like this will soon be <a title=\"On Sale At Last\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1671312\/on-sale-at-last-twine-your-gateway-to-the-internet-of-things\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">every day<\/a>, in every house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a04.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s inevitable. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The IoT cannot be stopped (despite views to the <a title=\"One Thing That Could Stop The Internet of Things\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3016251\/the-one-thing-that-could-stop-the-internet-of-things\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contrary<\/a>).\u00a0Rob Van Kranenburg, author of \u00a0the <a title=\"Internet of Things Book\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Internet-Things-Sean-Dodson-Kranenburg\/dp\/9078146060\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1379630525&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=internet+of+things+kranenburg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">book<\/a>\u00a0<em>The Internet of Things<\/em>,\u00a0\u00a0gives a <a title=\"The Sensing Planet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1681563\/the-sensing-planet-why-the-internet-of-things-is-the-biggest-next-big-thing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">timeline<\/a> and a convincing argument for its inevitability. Basically, the IoT has hit a sweet spot in history where our ability to create technology is almost perfectly paired with our insatiable desire to connect: with each other, with our <a title=\"Phone Internet Usage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/09\/16\/tech\/mobile\/phone-internet-usage\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">devices<\/a>, and with the services we now require to make our lives <a title=\"Cisco Internet of Things\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en_us\/about\/ac79\/docs\/innov\/IoT_IBSG_0411FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s the Next Big Thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t believe me? Google it. Every tech company is talking about it, Kickstarter is funding a myriad of <a title=\"Internet of Things and Kickstarter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.postscapes.com\/internet-of-things-investment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">projects<\/a>\u00a0for it\u00a0and, whether we know it or not, we have all made a market for it by our unabashed <a title=\"Nexus 4 Phones Sold Out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/nexus-4-phones-sold-out-at-google-play\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demand<\/a> for its products. Apple iPhone <a title=\"iPhone 5s Reservations Almost Sold Out in Bejing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/iphone-5s-reservations-almost-sold-out-in-beijing-hong-kong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5s<\/a> anyone?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready we\u2019re seeing a groundswell of new products that insinuate themselves <a title=\"Design and the Digital World\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/08\/design-and-the-digital-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seamlessly<\/a> into users\u2019 lives. These include personal sensors like Jawbone\u2019s Up, the voice- and gesture-controlled Xbox One, hyper-intelligent apps like Highlight that alert you to interesting people in your immediate vicinity, and Automatic, a gadget that communicates with your smartphone to tell you when you are driving inefficiently.
