{"id":2933,"date":"2011-11-03T04:34:26","date_gmt":"2011-11-03T08:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/?p=2933"},"modified":"2021-10-19T06:48:47","modified_gmt":"2021-10-19T10:48:47","slug":"ubuntu-11-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/ubuntu-11-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Ubuntu 11.10 &#8211; A Linux Misstep?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubuntu<\/a> is the heavyweight champion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linux<\/a> world.\u00a0 It is the most downloaded and used of all Linux distributions.\u00a0 Its interface is easy to use, and it allows for heavy user customization.\u00a0 However, with their newest upgrade to <a href=\"http:\/\/old-releases.ubuntu.com\/releases\/11.10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubuntu 11.10<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/OneiricOcelot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oneiric Ocelot<\/a> as it is called, the champion is taking a few body shots.\u00a0 The beloved Linux distribution is facing an uncharacteristic level of user crankiness with this new release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Unity Bar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_unitybar.jpg\" alt=\"Ubuntu Unity Bar\" title=\"Ubuntu Unity Bar\" width=\"450\" height=\"264\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3480 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_unitybar.jpg 450w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_unitybar-128x75.jpg 128w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_unitybar-420x246.jpg 420w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/264;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As minor as it may seem, one of the most common complaints that the Ubuntu user base has with this version is the Unity bar, which is Linux\u2019s equivalent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Windows<\/a> task bar.\u00a0 In this new Ubuntu version, it is permanently stuck on the left hand side of your screen.\u00a0 Also, the icons available on it are not customizable and you cannot choose which folders are accessible from there.\u00a0 Being less customizable than Windows is never a good start.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upgrade Issues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A much bigger reported problem is that users are having issues making the jump from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10.\u00a0 In a great deal of cases, it requires that the user do a complete reinstall, a massive shortcoming for such an ostensibly minor version increase.\u00a0 Missing files, changed extensions and just about every type of upgrade headache has been reported. Having to re-installing 3<sup>rd<\/sup> party programs certainly doesn\u2019t ease the pain.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"650\" height=\"360\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UecVTPFUCn8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Users who had upgraded to VMware Workstation 8 (which is a large percentage, since most Linux users are either IT employees, system admins or &#8220;super users&#8221; of one flavor or another) experienced the most trouble with upgrading.\u00a0 Their systems frequently locked up, requiring a rescue disk and many hours spent backing up their data, using a fresh, virgin install of 11.10 and then moving back all their data to the system and reinstalling VMware.\u00a0 We weren\u2019t exaggerating when we used the word &#8220;headache&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>File organization and ease of use<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_file_folder.jpg\" alt=\"Ubuntu File Folder\" title=\"Ubuntu File Folder\" width=\"450\" height=\"159\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3481 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_file_folder.jpg 450w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_file_folder-128x45.jpg 128w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_file_folder-420x148.jpg 420w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_file_folder-372x131.jpg 372w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ubuntu_file_folder-328x116.jpg 328w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/159;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On top of the new problems, Ubuntu 11.10 did not address a lot of the more serious previous issues that users complained of regarding file and program management.\u00a0 When you get rid of drop down menus and revert to icon-led organization, suddenly being able to find a document you were working on but may have misplaced in the filing system is far more difficult than it needs to be.\u00a0 While you can still usually find it with a few keystrokes, search results wind up being irritatingly varied.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inability to use the desktop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ubuntu_11.10_Desktop_Screenshot.jpg\" alt=\"Ubuntu Desktop\" title=\"Ubuntu Desktop\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3482 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ubuntu_11.10_Desktop_Screenshot.jpg 450w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ubuntu_11.10_Desktop_Screenshot-128x96.jpg 128w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ubuntu_11.10_Desktop_Screenshot-420x315.jpg 420w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ubuntu_11.10_Desktop_Screenshot-372x279.jpg 372w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ubuntu_11.10_Desktop_Screenshot-328x246.jpg 328w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/337;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are like most users, you enjoy and sometimes require the ability to use your desktop to, say, drag a terminal window there and work with it.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the desktop environment in 11.10 is not a workspace.\u00a0 This glaring oversight has Ubuntu users so disappointed in the evolution of &#8220;Unity&#8221; as an interface that many are thinking the sacrilegious and looking towards other options.\u00a0 It is just too obvious that Oneiric Ocelot needs a few more turns on the wheel of development in order to shave off the rough patches and work out the bugs.\u00a0 It is usable, but barely, and Ubuntu has in the past raised the bar of expectations far higher than this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Going to stick it out? Here\u2019s what to keep in mind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Choosing to stick it out and see what happens?\u00a0 After all, even Windows had Windows ME, which after some work turned out to be not the worst thing they\u2019ve ever done. Here is a list of tools for the loyal to keep handy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A rescue disk:<\/strong> In case you make some change to your system and can\u2019t undo it easily.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Ubuntu user forums<\/strong>: Here you may be able to find help, tips and tweaks to make your wait more bearable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Ubuntu website:<\/strong> As they release more information there might be usable tidbits that lead to greater functionality, even if it\u2019s only short-term patches for some of the bigger problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lest it sound too much like we\u2019re trying to steer you away from sticking around, remember that this is only a summary of others\u2019 reviews.\u00a0 As always, your mileage may vary.\u00a0 Not everyone experienced these levels of problems.\u00a0 Many who did got around them.\u00a0 Furthermore, as Linux is a very community-driven project, the kind of feedback that you can provide about the process would probably be appreciated, and could speed the development of fixes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No, you\u2019ve convinced me.\u00a0 What are my other options<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For those frustrated with Ubuntu 11.10 there are a few alternatives that they might enjoy instead.\u00a0 There\u2019s always the option of sticking with an older version and waiting around for the bugs to get squished.\u00a0 Remember, though, there is the option of trying a new distribution altogether.\u00a0 While we must wade through hundreds of available Linux distributions to say so, the one that comes most recommended for users of Ubuntu is \u201cMint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mint is a spin on Ubuntu 10.04.\u00a0 There are a few changes stylistically, but each one is made with an eye towards greater functionality.\u00a0 All of your favorite Ubuntu perks are there, without the worries of the new \u201cUnity\u201d interface coming along and messing with your setup during an update.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the greatest perk about Mint is its new software store and updater.\u00a0 It allows you to experience a greater range of services while also offering a backup utility so that moving forward, if you decide that you enjoyed your older setup more you can revert with little hassle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, what is the bottom line?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The problems with Ubuntu\u2019s recent release versions are widespread and likely will take a while to work out.\u00a0\u00a0 For those who are dedicated to Ubuntu, they may wish to stick it out, utilizing the tools listed above in order to make their stay more pleasant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/linux_mint.png\" alt=\"Linux Mint\" title=\"Linux Mint\" width=\"427\" height=\"277\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3484 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/linux_mint.png 427w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/linux_mint-128x83.png 128w, https:\/\/webhostinggeeks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/linux_mint-420x272.png 420w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 427px;
