    Con Artists! They screwed me out of $400 in illegitimate charges

    I was with 1and1 for nearly 15 years, ever since they moved into the USA. I became accustomed to ignoring their name on my credit card bill, because for the first ten years or so they were a great hosting service. I recently noticed some odd charges from them and started looking into it. Turns out they overcharged me about $400 over the past 18 months with BS "extra" software that I never approved and frankly, isn't even compatible with my website. When I called their support to get things sorted I was expecting an apology. Instead I they just added insult to injury and told me it was my fault, because they sent an email (among the 10 promotional emails they send out per month) at some point warning me that if I didn't check a box in their control panel, then this monthly $20 charge would automatically kick in. This is like going to McDonalds, ordering a big mac, giving them your credit card and then getting a big mac, a milkshake and a receipt for $100. Then when you ask them what happened, they tell you that McDonalds has a policy where everyone buys a $97 milkshake unless they explicitly tell the cashier that they don't want the milkshake. Then when you explain that you're lactose intolerant and can't even drink the milkshake and would like to return it, they tell you that you're stupid for not reading the milkshake policy that is written on the ceiling above the third stall in the men's restroom. I'm guessing what they're doing isn't technically illegal, but it's definitely the shittiest thing any business has ever done to me... ever. Their service is already 3x the market rate, but I was planning on sticking with them forever out of loyalty and laziness. They just lost a lifelong customer.
